Warning! This intro will be longer than future posts. It will cover what topics I’ll be focusing on & who I am, (besides the hot crazy mess of a mama chasing after her two extremely active baby boys) so you can then decide if you’d like to continue on this (insane) journey with me. 🙂
In a blogging community, saturated with so many different motherhood accounts, why should you follow me?
I have come across motherhood blogs where after reading a few posts I feel alienated. You will never feel judged here. If you want a happy place to read funny, real stories about motherhood, see lots of photos of Kai & Rowan and learn things like how I’m able to do hair and makeup in 10 minutes flat while holding both of my sons on my lap then this is the blog for you.
I’m not perfect (FAR from it) & I’m going to be completely honest with you. No hidden agendas. No sugarcoating…well some extremely difficult days may have a little sugar added on top, but I’m going to be real with you about what life is really like with my two very vivacious boys. My apartment is almost always cluttered with toys and clothing. When you see a seemingly clean background in my photos, just remember there is a pile of miscellaneous items that have been strategically placed in a corner or closet out of sight. If you see me put together it’s because it’s been a rare day that I’ve actually had the time to shower and slap some makeup on & for every good photo of my toddler there’s 100 more of him giving me an annoyed look letting me know it’s time to put the camera away. Bottom line, there’s a lot more to the boys & I than what you see on Instagram & you’ll be seeing many more dimensions of our lives here.
I’d like to throw all of the mom labels out the window. Personally, I do not identify with any of them & here comes the sentimental bit. The most important thing for me is to make sure my children never have a lack of love in their lives. I’m raising them to be loving, respectful, hardworking and caring boys who will hold on to these virtues as they grow into men. The world is in desperate need of gentlemen and if they turn out to be anything like their father, I will be the happiest woman on earth. I’m a little of this & a little of that and at the end of the day, whatever works best for you and your family is the way to go. Every family is different in a hundred ways and no baby book or “foolproof” advice will make you a good mother, I believe the love you have for your children is what makes you a good mother.
Why start a blog now?
I’ve always loved to write, but the idea of creating a blog never crossed my mind until I started growing a following on Instagram. To be honest, launching a blog with an already large audience is terrifying. Most blogs grow and develop while building an audience along the way. To launch this blog, presenting my life and words to an already large & diverse group of people is extremely intimidating. I’ve built this new blog entirely on my own so please bear with me. I’m not a web developer (not even close) and working with WordPress these past few months have really tested my patience & there may have been several (20) times I’ve wanted to throw my computer out the window. Thankfully, no computers were harmed in the making of this site.
On a more personal level, I’m a bit of a socially-awkward introvert in real life. I’ve always been this way. I make jokes at the wrong time, to the wrong person. I hide in empty rooms at large parties just to catch my breath & making small talk with a stranger makes me nervous. Point being, it’s not my personality to start a blog about myself without a push, or interest. Social media has given me that push & the more I think about this new creative outlet, the more I become SUPER excited about the months to come & sharing this personal journey with you.
So… What else besides motherhood will this blog be about?
I’ve received a lot of messages asking where I buy my clothes & this makes me as giddy as a school girl because I have an eternal love for everything fashion. It would be a DREAM to share my favorite looks & how I style outfits. If Anthropologie, Free People and ASOS got together had a weird little fashion love child, it would be me.
Since becoming a mama, style and taking the time to put together looks have taken the back-burner & I’ve adjusted accordingly. I now buy the basics; items of clothing that can work with several different types of looks. I spend the majority of my money on the boys, so I have to be smarter and more conservative when it comes to buying my own clothing.
I’m a sucker for a good sale so whenever I have a good discount code or become aware of a sale I’ll pass the info on to you. I will also share where I purchase the boy’s clothing from. I personally don’t like large graphics and text on children’s clothing. The simpler, the better & it’s taken a while to find the baby brands I like best.
I’m not a makeup artist but I’ve spent a good portion of my modeling “career” sitting in a makeup chair (and I use the term “career” loosely, I modeled whenever I could to support myself through college. I do not consider myself a Kate Moss wannabee. One can dream). After hours of hair & makeup, I would look in the mirror & barely recognize who I saw. Now that I’m older and more comfortable in my own skin (thank you Christopher Ciotola), I have a five to ten-minute daily beauty routine which makes me 100x more confident walking out the door. I’ve spent way too much of my life worrying what other people think of me and less how I feel about myself.
My beauty posts will cover things like, my everyday makeup routine, date night looks, favorite products & how I’m able to apply makeup with one hand, hold a baby in the other all while watching my toddler run away with a handful of brushes that I’ll likely never see again.
I’ve gone through countless foundations to find a few go-to’s that will make it look like you’re not wearing makeup at all. The ol’ I’m wearing makeup but I don’t want you to think I’m wearing makeup trick. I’ve watched countless youtube hair tutorials & carefully studied how my hairdresser blow-dries and curls my hair (I’m sure I also creeped him out in the process). I can now properly do my own hair, which is an accomplishment if you were to see a photo of me from High school. It was bad..real bad. My hair received the nickname Mufasa from The Lion King (Whose HAIR gets their own nickname?! Kids are MEAN!). I hope that by sharing some of my beauty tips and tricks, I can make a few of you less stressed about what others think and more empowered & happy in your own skin.
I’m going to do a monthly post sharing my favorite photos from recent family photo-shoots, ending with a Q&A from the photographer. I LOVE organizing shoots with my family. I style all of us, do my own hair & makeup and one of my favorite aspects is knowing that I’m going to cherish all of these photographs as Chris & I grow old together. Family photo-shoots can be incredibly daunting (especially with young children) so I’d love to share how I prepare & power through a shoot. Shooting alone, or with a significant other? The same tips apply! I will talk about how I prepare and ease myself to feel comfortable in front of the camera. I’ll also share how I take the photos of the boys that I post on Instagram and the tips, tricks (and bribes) I use to get a good photo with two active kiddies.
To me, the definition of motherhood is how I raise my boys while maintaining balance to our lives. The boys, & how they are constantly developing these amazing little personalities include a whole different set of stories & need their own category. Let’s be honest, the real reason I started growing an audience in the first place is because of Kai. I signed up for Instagram 3 years ago, a few months after getting married & right before I got pregnant with Kai. It wasn’t until he turned 1 that I began taking photos of him with a nice camera & started getting attention from large baby/fashion & lifestyle accounts that would reach out asking if they could re-post his photo. The rest is history, and here we are over 1 year later with another little blessing added to our lives, sweet baby Rowan. I will be sharing Kai & Rowan’s quirky traits and personality developments as they grow, along with photo (overload) updates. My phone currently has over 39,000 photos on it and a good 90% of them are of the boys so everything you see on my Instagram -> crank that up to the 1000th degree and that is what you’ll get here. There will be a mix of professional photos, iPhone photos that my husband sneakily takes of the boys crawling on top of me while I’m sprawled out on the living room carpet, and everything in between.
Lastly, to the courageous ones who just read all of that, (along with the ones who skimmed, and that’s ok too!) I want to THANK YOU for taking the interest in seeing what this blog will be about. I look forward to sharing with you our everyday life, monumental moments, and everything in between.
